Hathorn Transfer & Storage was founded by Edgar C. Hathorn in 1948 with one used truck and one assistant. In 1951, Mr. Hathorn began his affiliation with North American Van Lines. In a few years, Hathorn Transfer had become one of the most prominent and respected agencies in the entire North American System.
Hathorn built his business on two fundamental principles: Quality service and fair pricing. The business thrived under his leadership and grew to become the largest intrastate mover in Louisiana. Edgar was the first person elected to the Louisiana Household Good Carriers’ Association’s Hall of Fame. Active in his community, Hathorn was elected president of the Rapides Parish Police Jury and president of the Louisiana Police Jurors’ Association. He also served as president of Civitan International.
In 1974, Edgar’s son, William D. (Bill) Hathorn came to work as Director of Operations. Keeping true to his father's founding principles, Bill continued the focus on quality and price. Hathorn Transfer soon won North American’s highly coveted Commitment to Excellence award representing the elite of the North American family.
Bill has served as president and chairman of the board of directors of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association and served 19 years as president of the Louisiana Household Goods Carriers’ Association. He served on both the Joint Military-Industry Advisory Committee and the Military-Industry Affairs Panel of the American Movers Conference in Washington D.C.
He also served several years on North American’s Quality Assurance Committee in Ft. Wayne Indiana.
After visiting and researching professional record centers around the U.S., Bill launched Hathorn Record Management Systems. HRMS incorporated state-of-the-art technology for storage and retrieval of data and information. Within 5 years, HRMS was servicing over 300 clients within a 250-mile radius of Alexandria. HRMS now manages clients’ most sensitive data in the fields of medicine, law, insurance, accounting, industry, finance and others.
